[Baltimore Sun] Child dead, another injured after bounce house becomes ‘airborne,’ flies onto field at Southern Maryland Blue Crabs baseball game
A child died and another was injured Friday night after a bounce house they were playing in flew onto the field at a Southern Maryland Blue Crabs baseball game in Waldorf.
Charles County 911 received a call around 9:21 p.m. for a moon bounce becoming “airborne due to wind gusts” at Regency Furniture Stadium while children were still inside it during the baseball game, according to a Charles County Government news release. It flew about 15-20 feet high “causing children to fall” before it landed on the field, the release says.
The National Weather Service noted that the wind was about 15 miles per hour around 9 p.m. in Waldorf.
A 5-year-old boy from La Plata was taken to Children’s Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. A second child was flown out by Maryland State Police but experienced injuries that weren’t life-threatening.
“Our entire organization shares our condolences with the family mourning the loss of a child, and concern for the child who was injured,” said Southern Maryland Blue Crabs General Manager Courtney Knichel in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with them all.”
The club canceled Saturday night’s baseball game and other activities.
