[Baltimore Sun] Don’t ignore how Hopkins has hurt its neighbors | READER COMMENTARY
Christopher B. Summers of Maryland Public Policy Institute writes from Rockville charging Baltimore City Councilwoman Odette Ramos with extortion (“Did a council member just try to extort Johns Hopkins?” July 24). He criticizes Ramos for wanting money from Johns Hopkins University for affordable housing in conjunction with a request for a zoning change.
Summers either is unaware of or has chosen to overlook that Hopkins, in order to expand adjacent to the hospital, disrupted and dispersed with inadequate compensation an entire community in Baltimore’s Middle East neighborhood.
Maryland Public Policy Institute says it is for open and civil dialogue. To deride a trust fund for affordable housing and a land bank as a “pet project” does not conform with that mission. It does, however, appear very partisan and in alignment with the mission of The Baltimore Sun’s owner.
