Howard County Restaurant and Craft Beverages weeks are here again!

This popular event will take place from Aug. 12-25. Many restaurants pull out all the stops, with delightful menus at reasonable prices. The next time you visit the historic district be sure to check out the Howard House, at 8202 Main St., currently the home of Pam Long Photography. The building’s façade recently had its beautiful cast iron grillwork replaced, and now it’s decorated with at least a dozen hanging baskets filled with beautiful red flowers. It is a striking sight.

“If you can walk, you can dance.” That’s the welcoming mantra of the square dance group at Glen Mar Church, 4701 New Cut Road. They are offering an introduction to modern square dancing on Saturday, from 7 to 9 p.m. Couples and singles are welcome at no charge. Wear comfortable shoes and look forward to making new friends and exercising your mind and body. This event is open to participants ages 12 and older. On Sunday, there will be a Pop-up African Clothing event featuring attire, fabrics, jewelry and other accessories from multiple sellers, including ClassyByCheeChee, RemmyTee, and more. The shopping event will be held at 10176 Baltimore National Pike, Suite 117 (just west of the Sonic Drive-In), from 1:30 to 7 p.m. For details call 301-418-8838.

Backwater Books, at 8156 Main St., has several interesting events coming up. A book launch for local author Christopher L. Izant’s debut, “Final Engagement: A Marine’s Last Mission and the Surrender of Afghanistan,” is set for 7 p.m., Aug. 13. On Aug. 20 at 7 p.m., an evening with Maryland romance writers M.C. Vaughn, E. Erin Watson and Kristi Wolf is on the schedule.

Clark’s Elioak Farm has named August “Gem-mining Month.” Visit the farm on Route 108 throughout the month and purchase a bag of sand, gems and minerals. Then use the water in their sluice to wash away the sand and see what treasures you will find. Each bag of comes with an identification guide to use to determine what gems and minerals you have.

The Ellicott Mills Children’s Museum, 3725 Park Ave., 10:30 a.m.-noon, Aug. 17. “Careers of the 1800s” will introduce children to a day in the life of a mill worker, a milliner, a carpenter and a farmer.
